One of America's most recognized television icons, Buddy Ebsen was an American character actor and dancer whose career spanned seven decades.
Buddy is probably most remembered for his starring role as "Jed Clampett" in the popular long running television series The Beverly Hillbillies. He later had the title role in the 1970's detective series, "Barnaby JoEarly in his career, Ebsen played Fess Parker's sidekick in Disney's Davy Crockett miniseries that ran in 1953-54. He made his television debut on an episode of "The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre."
Buddy Ebsen was supposed to play the role of the "Tin Man" in the Wizard of Oz but he became allergic to the makeup that caused him to discontinue the role.
Other roles in films were "Born To Dance," "Captain Jerry" with Shirley Temple, and "Broadway Melody" with Judy Garland. He was also in "Breakfast at Tiffany's with Audrey Hepburn. He was an outstanding dancer.
In addition to his acting and dancing talent, Buddy was accomplished in seamanship and taught the subject to US Navy officer candidates. He served in the US Coast Guard where he had the rank of Ensign.
Buddy Ebsen made his final television appearance as "Uncle Roy Houston" on the crime drama series Matt Houston on ABC.
Ebsen died on July 6, 2003 at the age of 95 from pneumonia. Following a private family funeral, Ebsen was cremated and scattered at sea. A public memorial service was held at the Television Academy in North Hollywood that was hosted by actor, Dick VanDyke.
