James "Jimmy" Maitland Stewart was an American film and stage actor known for his down to earth persona and his distinctive drawl voice.
He was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania. As a child, he loved music and was given an accordion that he eventually mastered and was also an airplane pilot.
Stewart starred in many classic films and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy Awards as well as nominated for five Academy Awards
Jimmy Stewart had a noted military career during World War II and the Cold War and rose to the rank of Brigadier General. He was the first major American movie star to wear the uniform.
Jimmy Stewart is ranked #3 Greatest Male Screen Legend by the American Film Institute as well as the most represented leading actor on the 100 Greatest Films of All Time.
Among his films include "Made for Each Other" "The Philadelphia Story" "It's A Wonderful Life" "After Harvey" "The Greatest Show On Earth" "The Spirit of St. Louis"and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"
He was also in many popular western films and his voice was used in numerous animated films. He appeared in 92 films, television programs and shorts. Ten of the films have been recorded in the National Film Registry.
He is considered to be one of the most influential actors in the history of American cinema.
He died on July 2, 1997 at the age of 89 from a blood clot in the lung. He rests in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
