Remembering Vivien Leigh November 5, 1913 - July 8, 1967

Vivien Leigh, Lady Olivier was born Mary Vivian Hartley. She was a British stage and screen actress that won two Academy Awards during her illustrious career.  Her most recognized role was "Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind.  She also portrayed the role of "Blanche DuBois in "A Streetcar Named Desire"

She appeared in "Fire Over England" in 1937.  Vivian Leigh won a Tony Award for her performance on Broadway's "Tovarich"

The American Film Institute ranks her #16 on the list of the Greatest Actresses of All Time.

Her second husband was Sir Laurence Olivier with whom she made numerous films including "The Hamilton Woman".  She also performed with Olivier on stage in "Romeo and Juliet"  They were married for twenty years.  She dealt with manic depression that took a toll on their marriage until it ended in divorce.


Vivien Leigh suffered from tuberculosis that would eventually end her life on July 7, 1967 at the age of 53.

Vivien Leigh's memorial service was held in St. Martin-in-the-Fields (program pictured). She was cremated and her ashes were spread over the waters of her mill pond at her estate Tickeridge outside of London England.
